THE STORY:

In my mind, Muir is at the top of the list when it comes to driving the wilderness conservation movement at the end of the 19th, and beginning of the 20th centuries. Certainly people like Henry David Thoreau, Theodore Roosevelt and dozens, if not hundreds of other philosophers, naturalists and politicians played significant roles, but Muir was there early, and at the very center and heart of the movement.

His story and gigantic influence on the preservation and conservation of wild areas in the United States and throughout the world is fascinating and inspiring.  Way too much to do justice in this product's background story.  But, I would like to say that anyone who enjoys a walk through a park or climbing a mountain owes it to themselves to discover the story as to why both places and everything in between must exist and be protected.

At A16 we always sung his reprise, and in the process made sure his accomplishments we're celebrated and passed along to our Customers and our co-workers.  It was in that spirit in 1973 that A16's owner and my Uncle Mic Mead, asked me to produce a silk-screened T-Shirt with Muir's image and the words, "John Muir Lives."  That was when at 16 I was first introduced to the remarkable man.  For the next 50 years I had good intentions to reproduce the design and product, but for some reason we never got around to it. It's with this background story that I proudly reintroduce the design with the hope that by wearing it, we'll help keep his contribution and spirit alive at a most critical time.
