This year's Hike Weekends will be held May 19-21 & June 2-4. Info Sessions start this month at several San Diego locations. Read on!

The Trailblaze Challenge San Diego (TBCSD), presented by Wheelhouse Credit Union is a one-day endurance event and extended training program that gives participants the opportunity to hike a 28-mile journey along the terrain of the Pacific Crest Trail all while raising necessary funds to support Make-A-Wish San Diego and wish granting for children with critical illnesses.

Before registering for the hike, all participants are required to attend a no-commitment info session to learn more about the program. During the info session, attendees will have the chance to learn about:

  • The training program which includes optional weekly training hikes and an extensive library of local trail maps and notes.
  • TBCSD Training Clinics - topics include hiking shoes, socks and other trail essentials, hydration, nutrition, and cross training
  • Support and coaching from experienced Hike Leaders and Make-A-Wish staff
  • What to expect during Hike Weekend and the 28 mile hike day
  • Detailed information on the fundraising requirements, Make-A-Wish mission and support provided to each participant.

Sign up for an info session today!

Participant spots will fill quickly. In 2022, Trailblaze Challenge San Diego raised over $755,000 to support wish granting for children in our community, making it a record-breaking fundraising year. In 2023, we will celebrate the 7th anniversary of the TBCSD and the 40th anniversary of Make-A-Wish San Diego. It’s an exciting year ahead and we hope you’ll be part of it!

A16 presents Barney Scout Mann’s most recent presentation for your viewing. In September of 2022 “Scout” spoke to participants of the Make-A-Wish TrailBlaze Backpacking Adventure program.  SCOUT’s storytelling skills and knowledge of the Pacific Crest Trail stand out in this video. He is an accomplished Author, Hiker and Outdoor Advocate. As he tells his story about his passion for the PCT, you can see deep shades of his years as a Camp Counselor.  His enthusiasm for his time on the trail is infectious and his range of experience is vast.  It’s no wonder,…. he’s thru-hiked the PCT (returning to sections multiple times), the Appalachian Trail, the Continental Divide Trail, and countless other trails over the past near 60 years.  And when he skips a beat during his talk, his wife and longtime hiking partner Sandy “FRODO,” chimes in to fill in the gaps. Watching this alone is worth the price of admission.

Scout has been a friend and frequent speaker at A16 for years and we’re delighted to offer you this video in hopes that it will serve to keep you inspired and help educate you as you move along your own natural path.

In this 64 minute video you'll get plenty of valuable information about planning for your round trip on this iconic mountain. Jack and Betsy are veteran Whitney day-hikers and unofficial mountain ambassadors. As of July 11,2022 Jack, perhaps better known as "Crazy Jack" has safely summited the mountain 202 times in just the past 23 years. Sometimes from start to finish all the way down in the town of Lone Pine. Betsy stops to smell and photograph the flowers so she's only tallied up 66 successful climbs. Only?  Once from the East Face rock climbing approach. So needless to say that they know the mountain like the backs of their hands. They also know first hand the challenges you'll face in the Summer and Fall and how to overcome them. Sometimes that means turning around, and trying another day. Learn when that needs to happen. This video is a must for anyone whose either got their "Whitney Zone" permit in hand or is hoping to snag one at the last minute.  Enjoy & Learn!
