Jack and Betsy are veteran Whitney day-hikers and unofficial mountain ambassadors. As of June 2023, perhaps better known as "Crazy Jack" has safely summited the mountain over 200 times in just the past 24 years. Sometimes from start to finish all the way down in the town of Lone Pine. Betsy stops to smell and photograph the flowers so she's only tallied nearly 70 successful climbs. Only? Once from the East Face technical rock climbing approach. So needless to say they know the mountain like the backs of their hands. They also know first hand the challenges you'll face in the Summer and Fall and how to overcome them. Sometimes that means turning around, and trying another day. Learn when that needs to happen. A16 presents Barney Scout Mann’s most recent presentation for your viewing. In September of 2022 “Scout” spoke to participants of the Make-A-Wish TrailBlaze Backpacking Adventure program. SCOUT’s storytelling skills and knowledge of the Pacific Crest Trail stand out in this video. He is an accomplished Author, Hiker and Outdoor Advocate. As he tells his story about his passion for the PCT, you can see deep shades of his years as a Camp Counselor. His enthusiasm for his time on the trail is infectious and his range of experience is vast. It’s no wonder,…. he’s thru-hiked the PCT (returning to sections multiple times), the Appalachian Trail, the Continental Divide Trail, and countless other trails over the past near 60 years. And when he skips a beat during his talk, his wife and longtime hiking partner Sandy “FRODO,” chimes in to fill in the gaps. Watching this alone is worth the price of admission.
