THE STORY:

Being within a relatively short drive from most Southern Californians, the 400-mile long Sierra Nevada and White Mountain Ranges are 2 of the Go-To Play-Grounds for A16ers searching for High-Country solace and challenge.  If you’re lucky, around timberline  (typically between 9,500  – 11,000’ elevation) you may come across a lone slow-growing magnificent Bristlecone Pine (Pinus longaeva).  Its trunk is twisted and beaten back by the harsh and relentless winter and summer storms of the high and lonesome. The tree usually appears to be growing right out of the rock. The oldest of these trees is more than 5,000 years and may well be the world's most ancient living thing. Another variety of the Bristlecone pine that does not live as long, can be found in the mountainous regions of Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona (Pinus aristata).
