THE STORY:
A16 has had a long love affair with the 214+- Mile John Muir Trail. This epic pathway with its magnificent views and natural features follows the backbone of the highest portion of the Sierra Nevada Range running from Yosemite National Park to the summit of Mt. Whitney. It's been a favorite stomping ground for A16ers and Customers from our earliest days in business. To us, the trail is an institution so it seemed fitting to celebrate its place in our hearts with a collegiate type image. In 1914, with urging from the Sierra Club, funding from the State of California, and with the cooperation of the National Park Service and the US Forest Service the plan for a trail was conceived. Construction began in 1915 and the trail hosted its first hikers the next year. So, 1916 is the year we've chosen to celebrate its establishment. The JMT was completed on the 100th anniversary of John Muir's birth in 1938.
WAIT....., THERE'S MORE:
I want to share a fun fact about the trail. In 1924 my Grandfather Raymond Mead, hiked the portion of the JMT that was completed at that point. His boots and a photo of him on the trail wearing them were displayed on A16's Re-Founder Mic Mead's cabin/office porch in the middle of the A16 San Diego shop. See photo of Mic & my Father Dave with the boots in 1983. -John D.
